On the day the House of Wonders collapsed, the residents of Stonetown gathered around its ruins wondering who was to blame. The World Heritage Palace, built-in 1883 by Sultan Barghash bin Said, was once one of the most emblematic buildings in East Africa, and was now covered in dust. Stonetown, Zanzibar December 2020.

From the Same Waters is a photographic project that seeks to document the everyday life of coastal communities along the Swahili coast in East Africa, from the shores of Somalia all the way to Mozambique. A region with a unique cultural fusion influenced by African, Arab, Indian, and European elements.
The project focuses on how the disparate cultural elements have shaped the coastal communities’ relationship with a changing environment, where ancient traditions constantly compete with modern realities.
